How to Know When It's Time for New AC and Heating Installation

May 5, 2022

While modern heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are durable, their components may begin to degenerate after some period. According to CNN, HVAC units typically last 15 to 20 years depending on how often you use and maintain them. But, when is it time for new AC and heating installation? The following are signs that your AC and heating system need replacement.

Strange Noise and Smell

It is normal for older air conditioners to get noisy with age. However, strange sounds like squeaking, grinding, or chattering aren't normal. Also, these systems may give out a burning smell, which is an indication that it's time for AC replacement.

A Build-Up of Fluids and Moisture

Besides small amounts of condensation, there shouldn't be fluids coming out of an air conditioner. If you notice a large amount of fluids around your air conditioner, consider addressing the issue as soon as possible. This may mean installing a new unit. It is important to note that excessive leakages cause the AC to underperform and pose a serious health risk to the house occupants.

High Energy Bills

Has your energy bill been constantly rising of late? This could be something to do with your AC unit struggling to get the job done. A malfunctioning system consumes too much energy than it should, which could explain your high bills. This is a big sign that it’s time for a new AC and heating installation.

Your AC Uses Freon

If your AC unit is more than 11 years old, it's probably using R-22, commonly known as Freon. Freon is banned in the U.S. today. According to The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), freon highly contributes to the diminution of the ozone layer, posing damage to the environment. This means systems that still rely on freon need to be replaced. The earlier you replace it, the better it is for the environment.

Frequent AC Repairs

If you frequently find yourself having to part with money for AC repairs, it may be time to quit. If your AC unit needs repairing more than twice a year, consider replacing it. After all, machine repairs can be incredibly costly and can add up over time.
